Oregon Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements: 3 Steps

The steps below are for nurses who are renewing their Oregon licenses. If you’re an out-of-state nurse looking to practice in Oregon, you must apply for licensure by endorsement or examination.

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

You must complete the process on time to successfully renew your nursing license. Oregon nursing licenses last two years before you must apply for renewal.

RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and APRNs must renew their licenses by midnight the day before your birthday in even-numbered years for those of you born in even-numbered years, and in odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years.

Step 2: Complete Your Continuing Education Requirements

RNs, LPNs, and APRNs must fulfill their continuing education and practice hour requirements to maintain their licenses. Continuing education requirements include:

• 1 hour of pain management education
• 2 hours of cultural competency education

In addition to the continuing education, RNs, LPNs, and APRNs must demonstrate one of the following during their previous two years of licensure:

• 400 nursing practice hours at your licensure level
• Graduation from a Board-approved school of nursing
• Completion of a Board-approved re-entry program

If you cannot meet any of the above requirements within the past two years, the Oregon Board of Nursing provides a few other options:

• If you’ve practiced at least 600 hours in the past 3 years, you must complete 20 hours of additional continuing education.
• If you’ve practiced at least 800 hours over the past 4 years, you must complete 30 hours of additional continuing education.
• If you’ve practiced less than 960 hours of practice in the past 5 years, you must apply for practice re-entry.

APRNs must also maintain an active national certification to renew. For APRNs licensed before January 2011, national certification is not required. Instead, you must complete a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education in the population in which you specialize.

CNAs don’t have continuing education requirements. However, they must have worked at least 400 paid hours during the previous two-year period.

Step 3: File Your Oregon State Board of Nursing License Renewal Application Online

You’ve fulfilled the continuing education requirements and you’ve ensured you’re on time, so now what? Once you’ve met the requirements, you can renew online as early as 45 days before your deadline. If you miss the window, you’ll be able to renew up to 30 days after the deadline for an added fee of $100.
