Mississippi Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Out-of-state nurses can obtain their license by endorsement. However, if you’re currently living and working in Mississippi, the steps below will show you what you need to do.

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

One of the most important steps in renewing a nursing license is knowing the correct deadline. This allows you to pace your preparation, avoid late renewal fees, and ensure your license remains active.

Both RNs and LPNs must renew their licenses every two years. RNs must renew between September 1 and December 31 of even years. LPNs must renew their licenses during the same time frame of odd years.

If you’re a CNA, you’ll need to renew your certification every 24 months. You’ll receive a reminder about 60 days before the expiration date.

Step 2: Satisfy Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing education ensures that nurses’ skills and competencies remain up to date. This helps maintain the safety and high-quality care patients can trust.

Both RNs and LPNs are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education to renew their licenses. They can learn about anything they choose as long as the class is board-approved. As long as CNAs work at least one documented eight-hour day within the past 24 months, they don’t need to complete continuing education.

Step 3: Renew Your Mississippi Nursing License Online

RNs and LPNs can complete the application online at the Mississippi BON portal. Simply log in to your account, submit the required information, and pay the $100 fee to complete your Mississippi board of nursing license renewal.

If you miss the window, late renewals are accepted until June 30. Keep in mind that these renewals will require additional late fees — renewals in January require an extra $50 fee. And for any renewals after that, there’s a $150 fee plus a criminal background check, which costs $75.

To renew a CNA certification, you must work for at least one paid and documented eight-hour day over the past 24 months. Once you’re able to prove you’ve met those requirements, you’ll complete a renewal form with sections that must be filled out by your employer. The CNA renewal fee is $26.
